Angry Birds Epic is an adventure take on the hit arcade-style Angry Birds gameplay. It is the first installment of this series that merges role-playing and turn-based battles together, wrapped into a fun and funny birds vs. pigs adventure.
Angry Birds Epic is set in the familiar world where the birds chase down the piggy team to get back their eggs. The game does not have the traditional text-based narration but tells the funny story via the vivid animation and facial expressions of the quirky characters and villains. In the Piggy Island, you will help the birds to hunt down the green pigs through a multitude of levels.
The heart of the gameplay is turn-based battle in each level. You can choose and take 3 birds to join the battle team and lead them into one or multiple rounds of attack. In-game control is simple – you just drag a line between your attacker and the target to unleash the different attack power and tap your birds to use supportive abilities on themselves or teammates. And if you’d like to learn more about your birds’ abilities or enemy attack style, you can tap and hold to turn on the text explanations.
You start off with only one bird Red in Angry Birds Epic and with progression will rescue other birds including Chuck, Matilda, Bomb and beyond and get them to your fighting team. Every bird belongs to a special class – Red is a melee warrior, Matilda, a healer and Chuck, a mage – which sets the tone for its battle style. But the class does not determine the concrete skills of birds. Rather birds’ special abilities are set and changed by the specific equipment and weapons they wear and wield.
The mage Chuck possesses the power to deal damage to all enemies. But an ordinary magician hat allows the yellow bird to put on a shock shield that inflicts 31 damages on attacking enemies, while the lightning costume can remove useful buffs from enemies and enables the yellow bird to give its attack turn to a teammate. And it’s the same with all other birds.
As you advance on the map, you will unlock and purchase new weapons and gear to increase the power of birds. Moreover, you can also craft handful items with the various materials collected by winning in a battle. From stones and seashells to shiny sand and seeds, all these ingredients can be thrown into the Forge or Alchemy to create new stuff whether it’s a hawk-eyed pistol for Bomb, a flower bag for Matilda or a cup of banana juice that can recover a bird’s health for 75.
There is certain depth of tactics in Angry Birds Epic due to the variety of costumes, items, weapons and so on for every bird. The green pigs are as diverse and even more hilariously depicted. Through levels, you will meet a continuously tougher piggy team. And the pig villains are of a motley group. There are small minions that poke birds with a twig or slap them with a flyswatter and bosses that threaten birds for a couple of turns and then unleash a powerful attack to do real harm. Faced with different enemies, you need to figure out the very tactics to defeat them. In case of losing a battle, there will be a consolation prize for you and sometimes a useful hint for winning.
Angry Birds Epic is free to play. In the freemium model, it unavoidably integrates some mainstay features like ads popping up between levels and extra in-app purchase. While ads are as intrusive as they are always, the IAP is optional if you are willing to invest more time to grind a little bit. Overall, Angry Birds Epic is a fun and solid entry to the franchise that is worth a download. [App Store][Google Play]
