From the creator of Bill Killem comes another arcade action-packed platfomer called Buzz Killem. The new game stars the titular hero, a retired war veteran who is called back to action on the mission of defending the US from alien invasion.
Buzz Killem features small-sized maps in multiple cityscapes from common scenes like the harbor to famous tourist sceneries like the Statue of Liberty. With changing backgrounds, levels differ from one another also in the layout of platforms, fixed or flexible. Combined with the random appearance of enemies falling from the sky, every game is not like any other.
Buzz Killem has simple tapping-based two-hand control. Run right or left, fire and jump. You will get the hang quickly after several missions. It feels tight and precise so that it gets out of your way.
Instead of an endless survival challenge, Buzz Killem offers three goals in a game. Kill 20 enemy floaters, collect 5 weapon craters/power-ups, and put on the Zombie disguise and so on. When you complete the specific three tasks of a stage, you can safely retreat and then return the battlefield to accomplish another set of objectives.
As you advance to higher levels of a stage, you also unlock new scenes to keep the game fun and fresh. Difficulty increases due to the ever-higher goal and tougher new enemies. The purple fireball-like floaters can chase you wherever you run; the saw soldiers may get you by surprise if you assume they couldn’t jump; and the enemy shooter also gradually evolves to be stronger able to take more bullets. But you grow in power, too, more skillful in moves and better equipped to take on enemy hordes.
Enemies defeated may drop items at times. They are free power-ups you can pick up and gain specific bonuses. Speed boosters, knives, coin magnets, jet packs, super jumps and more – these power-ups are quite self-explicit about their functions. You will also gather coins. These shiny pieces can be expended on new weapons and weapon upgrades. And their prices are very reasonable.
Guns and boosters aside, you are able to get extra bonuses from the different disguises for your fighter. From the green zombie to the Indian to a yellow block, a variety of free outfits can be switched on not only bringing a cosmetic change but also increased Buzz Killem’s abilities like extra bow/shotgun/suppressor attack, more heart and higher jump.
Buzz Killem is an addictive platformer that will keep you glued to earth-saving missions in a long sit. But one big minus that jeopardize the gameplay is it begins to crash and crashes a lot after one or two hours’ play. Otherwise, it is awesome.
Note: If you are interested in Buzz Killem it is now the best time to get it for free (the USA Independence Day weekend sale) before it returns to its normal price of $1.99.
