Crazy Taxi: City Rush is the first free-to-play installment in this franchise. It captures the vibe of the series with colorful worlds, frantic running and nostalgic puck music and transports all into a new free spin-off sequel most suitable for short play.
Crazy Taxi: City Rush is a mission-based racing game rather than a frantic endless runner. Players in it will pick up different customers, rush them into their destinations within the timer, and collect fares to invest in car upgrades and customization. The ride is very brief, usually taking seconds, and takes customers to diverse locations from parks and schools to restaurants and subway stations.
Crazy Taxi: City Rush features simple controls: swipe to change lanes, hold and release to turn, hit the boost button to gather speed, and tap rapidly to break and earn a few extra seconds for the ride to the next destination. It is pick up and play. With the simple one-touch controls and short rides, is it too casual and boring? Thankfully, the timer of each mission needs players to stay in high speed. While dining in the Chinatown and getting a hair cut & dye do not sound urgent, all missions come with a count-down and require players to reach the destinations, not one, within the time allotted.
To beat the time, simply avoiding traffics does not work sometimes. Why not blast straight through all in your way? On the streets, players can also gather tidbits of goodies like extra coins and boosters by swift changing of lanes and be able to earn extra fares by playing some bold tricks like sidewalk pass and cool ramp jumps. These danger and destruction elements add more fun and money.
Crazy Taxi: City Rush is free-to-play and it adopts the most common mechanics alongside. It has a fuel-based timer. After running out of the four drops in default, players either wait for its slow refill, or watch a video advert to get one point, or pay gems, the hard currency, for refill of four. That’s the worst part of the freemium feature. Ads also regularly pop up between missions. Other than that, it offers tons of in-app purchases. Car upgrades and accessories are indispensable but they can be fairly covered by the quick coins earned in doing missions, grinding required to certain extent. Loads more premium items from cooler characters and hired drivers are available, but they are not so necessary as to be worth buying.
Crazy Taxi: City Rush is a good and fun time waster. It is just not that compelling and frantic as its siblings of this franchise. And that is partly due to the free-to-play model. [iTune Link]
