Why does a chick stubbornly risk its life to cross dangerous roads? That is hard to figure out. But it is easy to tell that helping the chick to chase its goal is really addictive in Crossy Road. With its lovely art, amazing sounds and enjoyable gameplay, Crossy Road is a must-have arcade game and will stay on your devices for long.
The gist of Crossy Road is about tapping at good timing. It is all about to guide a chick or any other creature you unlock later to cross roads, railways and rivers and make as far as possible. You tap to hop and swipe to walk horizontally. And you do so at good timing to dodge cars or trains or avoid missing stepping board in the river. It sounds simple and it really is. But almost everything about Crossy Road is, from attention to details to implementation of F2P model, polished.
You will die a lot in the game. And the start interface after a fast flash cut-scene is always ready to let you dive into another adventure. A different adventure, thanks to the randomly generated game. As you try again and again, you may find yourself constantly adapting different plausible strategies. To dauntlessly dash ahead a few roads in a breath generates a sense of gloat, but that generally comes with a side effect, an early tap that results in a brake failure. After a few rash deaths, you probably want to play safe, hopping stably with some waiting. But when you wait too carefully and eventually too long in a road, an eagle will come swooping down to take your life.
While you repetitively tap and tap, you won’t get bored from that single act, because Crossy Road offers more along the way. The random map generation aside, the variety of creatures adds extra wonderfulness. From pig and penguin to ghost and grave digger, a roster of characters can be unlocked randomly by putting coins into a lottery-like machine. To switch into a new hopper is, first of all, a cosmetic change. And each creature’s vivid and amusing sounds of its own further add liveliness to the hopping journey. More than that, some characters also get special role-based abilities that influence the gameplay. The Mad Wizard is capable of falling trees while the lantern-carrying Grave Digger turns the game world into night with limited visual areas, for example.
And then, details in multiple aspects make the game feel sincere and refined. The whimsical feel in every hop, the music piercing through a car’s window, or the paper bird scared away by your approach are all noticeable and delightful. When you bump into a car, you feel the punching collision. And the cartoonish death comes in variety – sticking to one side of a car, vanishing into a couple of features under the blitzing train, or turning from a 3D model to planform.
Crossy Road is free-to-play and monetizes solely on the purchase of rare characters. It has adverts but displays them unobtrusively. You can choose to watch them for extra coins. You can collect spare coins on the road and sometimes receive them as free gift. You need coins to get more characters. You can choose to spend real cash only if you want to try all or those hard-to-gain types.
Crossy Road is a polished and enjoyable arcade hopper that is as fun in short bursts as in marathon sessions. It is a pick up and play and it is a must-have.
