Darkness Reborn is another fantasy MORPG from Gamevil, the developer and publisher that brought us Kritika: Chaos Unleashed to the mobile. If you love Kritika, you will find a lot to like in Darkness Reborn because the new game shares the basic concepts that make Kritika popular and also presents some new features of its own.
The story premise of Darkness Reborn is not appealing. It is about a knight on the adventure to fight monsters but ending to be cursed by a dragon’s evil. While the Cursed Knight runs rampant, he summons monsters from the rifts of the darkness to ravage the land. The interesting part is that instead of telling it in words or images, Darkness Reborn lets you role-play the knight in this told adventure. That does not help make a better story but helps make it less “lazy” because it involves you into it. At least, it gives a preview of the coming adventure and battles.
The real adventure begins after you create a character. Currently, it only has two available classes: well-balanced Warrior and ninja Kunoichi. And there is an Evil Hunter labeled “coming soon”. Probably, more classes will be added in later updates.
Darkness Reborn has many features and contents, most of which are locked at the beginning. That means you have to start with the single-player campaign leveling up your character while unlocking more features like boss raids and PvP competitions. There are tons of stages in the campaign where you explore dungeons, beat big and minion monsters, get loot and gear and level up. From the Archen Forest to the Jacculen Mine and beyond, you will encounter various monsters that come in ever bigger and mixed horde as you conquer more stages. To delve deeper into the darkness is one path and to revisit the cleared dungeons is another.
Every stage in the campaign has three difficulty tiers, Normal to Expert. When you reach the recommended levels of harder tiers, you can revisit the same dungeon to take on more challenging enemies. And the battle becomes more intense surely and more fun if you happen to open the Rift. From rifts there come waves of mobs. You get to defeat them and claim your spoils.
Besides Exp, you usually get gold coins and gear by clearing dungeons. Most gear you obtain are low-leveled. You can sell them for a few coins or melt them to enhance your best ones. Gold coins are the soft currency. You earn them from battle and spend them mostly on gear crafting & repairing and learning/upgrading skills.
Every character has four major skills, each with two sub branches, and a few passive skills to further boost stats in HP, attack and defense, etc.. During battle, you can use the basic regular attack and unleash the power of skills to evade damage, take on multiple enemies or deal fatal damage. When using skills, you will enter a Super Armor state resisting all damage temporarily. Moreover, beating foes up also fills in the Rage meter. Once full, you can gain extra strength from Rage that boosts attack speed and assaults till it wears away.
As mentioned, Darkness Reborn has more contents locked behind specific levels. When you reach Lv. 10, you get access to the AI Match and Custom Match that pit you against AIs and friends respectively in the team battle. Based on the interface, you should be able to set the game mode and battle map later, though Team Match and the map of Nest are the only choices for now. And you can also select the difficulty level that decides how many SOL, diamonds in the game, you will receive as winner. And if you raise character levels higher, you have more options. Battle fiercely with other players for higher individual ranking, take on other guilds for glory, and party up with up to five friends in the Boss raid. The higher the risk, the sweeter the spoils.
Whether you are pushing your way in the campaign or jumping into fray in the multiplayer activities, you will also complete some “plus” achievements – reach certain levels, repair equipment for n times, get full three stars for x levels in a run, and even die 3 times in the normal mode, etc. – unwittingly every now and then and get extra rewards.
Darkness Reborn is free-to-play. If your first instinct is “pay-to-win”, you cannot be wrong. But the game is doing ok, allowing you to get everything by investing time into it. It has timers, too. You need energy to enter dungeons and battle points to join PvP matchups. The initial supplies of them support more than an hour’s play at one sit. So this timer is not that bitchy. If you take it positively, your battery needs a breath, too.
