Dead Route is a single-player action game set in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by zombies. It can be said to be an action-packed endless runner or a gun-and-run style shooter. Whatever you put it, you will have frantic zombie-shooting battle and endless running challenges in Dead Route.
Dead Route integrates endless running mechanics but it is not a real endless survival game. Rather it is a mission-based running game mixed with shooting zombies. The game offers quite a few street blocks that can be unlocked when you reach specific ranks. Each district has multiple levels that challenge you to reach to the safe outpost, or known as the Gun Shop in the game, while completing the specific level objectives.
The basic gameplay in Dead Route is novice-friendly. Jump over cars, dumpsters and other obstacles, aim and fire zombies within range to avoid hurt, throw grenades to take on massive hordes, run through supply boxes containing food, ammo or mystery items to collect them, and manage to reach the safe outpost to pass a level. All these moves can be performed by simple taps and/or swipe in four directions. Simple missions will ease you into the game, but the challenging tasks may get you unprepared all of a sudden.
Even in the first episode, you have to beat down some tough missions tiered as hard or nightmare. In missions like these, a massive horde of the undead are scattered all the way towards the safe place ready to get you down. Not only a matter of enemy number, levels are tough also because they are tricky – multiple barriers in the turning point, bite-like supply boxes placed next to danger, a narrow platform on the side of a large gap, and unexpected behaviors from new type of zombie and more.
Gun and run is the simple sum-up of the gameplay. But Dead Route manages to conjure up a whole lot challenges based on that. There are scary flashlight-style night modes, special missions that put a requirement in the weapon you use, and tough daily challenges that test your quick reflex, accuracy in shooting and skillful coordination of gun and run. You earn coins from a battle based on several performs like headshot, enemy killed and completion and so on. And you can invest your earns to upgrade weapons and equipment or buy brand new ones.
As a free-to-play title, Dead Route gives shortcut to survival for players who are willing to pay for the exclusive premium weapon, gear as well as cool costumes. But that’s not the biggest complaint. Rather, the quickly draining energy bar is.
It costs one point of energy to play any level, easy or hard. Even if you successfully complete the last mission, it still takes one point to play the next. The default bar has a maximum of 10 points, so that is quickly drained pushing you to the crossroads: pay up or get out. And it takes 15 minutes to recover a point. That means two and a half hours for the full recharge. While the game is fun, the constant long cool-down makes it less so.
Dead Route is quite addictive due to the great variety of missions. And the challenges in the game keep it interesting and tease you itching for more. But the quickly draining energy bar is the big bully. Everytime the energy zeroes down in the game, the playing interests fade with it. How long will it survive on players’ device?
