Dungeon Hearts Blitz is structured conventionally with a split screen including a puzzle board and a combat zone. You switch any two tiles, not restrained to adjacent ones, to match at least three same-colored tiles on the board, which will drive the very fighter of that color to launch attack. If you can make combos and build multiple combinations of different colors, your fighters of those colors will fight simultaneously with greater power.
Skillful matches also fill up a Heart meter that allows you to activate a brief period of Fever time. During which all matching will fuel boosted attacks. Moreover, if you make combos and quickly consecutive combinations, you also gain random special tiles like bombs and multiplier. When spotting these tiles, make sure you include them into a match for they vanish quickly.
You have four types of standard tiles on the board, representative of four hero classes. In-game classes are rather generic including Warrior, Mage, Archer and Berserker, each with their typical battle style. Initially, you have only one warrior type hero but very soon can get the other three. The early available heroes are all of one-star level in rarity. To get the Star 2-4 heroes, you have to meet specific requirements first unless you are willing to pay up for the early activation.
Dungeon Hearts Blitz also integrates the mainstay RPG mechanics, that is, the hero level-up. You can upgrade your heroes with coins earned by battle. While the newly purchased heroes won’t have any special abilities, you can equip them with specialties like doubled damage or increased critical hit rates by enchanting runes. Runes are attainable in some dungeons. And they are one main way how the game monetizes if you want to skip grinding to hoard them.
From forests and swamps to temples and towers, Dungeon Hearts Blitz features 150 unique stages over a variety of backgrounds. Based on the back theme, diverse enemies will show up in waves and attack in their turns. And every dungeon can be played in three challenge tiers. Normal to nightmare to hell, increasing difficulty tests your matching strategy and speed as enemies grow stronger and come in more waves.
As you go deeper into the dungeon, Dungeon Hearts Blitz reveals more challenges that keep the game fresh and fun. But it has some issues that cannot be neglected. It needs further improvement in the graphics. When you build a strong combo and combination, the attack of heroes become intense but the number of damage dealt and words like combo and crit hit become blurry. To the top, the animation of combat scenes sometimes feels lagging and the shaky effects actually make eyes very uncomfortable.
