Epic Skater is a free, simple endless skating title featured with instant accessibility and quick fun. Grab your skateboard and show off your skills on Los Angeles streets.
Epic Skater is simple to learn. It offers an optional How-to-play tutorial that teaches several basic tricks like Ollie, grind and kickflip. It firstly illustrates the controls for each move clearly and then guides players to try out that trick before moving to the next. As stated, it’s optional and mainly prepared for players who are not familiar with skating at all or prefer to get the theory before hands-on experience.
For those that tend to learn from failure directly, you can simply grab the skateboard and start running. There will be a brief introduction of Ollie and nothing else before the first run. If with past experience in other endless skating titles, you can get the touch-controls easily and perhaps perform some untaught tricks and applaud for yourself in imagination. If you fail, you can start over and then get to learn controls of another trick before running again.
In-game controls are mainly based on tapping, holding, swiping and combination of any two. It takes some time to master the different tricks, especially the tricky ones like front flips while on the ground. And it challenges your quick reflex and skills in combo with increasingly harder paths due to the massive gaps, long stairs and unexpected barriers.
As you try to skate as far as possible, you will also collect coins and occasional energy drinks, usually requiring a skillful, high jump, occasionally on the way. Completion of the different sub-goals also rewards you coins sometimes. These coins can be in turn spent on upgrades of speed, grinding, trick, manual and so on to help you perform better. Besides, coins can be spent on Spinning for bonuses – one free spin available around every 15m – which randomly give you advantages like double-coins, decreased friction in grinding or extra manual points.
A free-to-play title, Epic Skater doesn’t let the IAP or ads infringe on fun badly. If you want to have more coins or energy drinks, which allow you to resume the run when you fail, you can purchase them for real cash. But you can have fun without them perfectly.
Epic Skater offers solid and quick fun as expected from a typical endless skating title. But it is not a fully-fledged but a small-sized creation short in variety not only in soundtracks but also in the skating paths. Compounded by the repetitive nature of this genre, that deducts a large chunk of fun and increases the odds of being deleted from the device.[App Store]
