Gemmylands is another drop in the big pool of the match-3 genre. With its fun and challenging levels across a colorful, cute planet, Gemmylands makes to that kind of rotation catalog many casual fans keep to fill up the timer-forced waiting of their favorite games.
As the title suggests, gems are the theme of Gemmylands and the elements on the play board. It is a pick up & play with the classic three-in-a-row mechanics. The first ten levels are more like a fast warm-up that can be completed with ease. After that, the challenge climbs.
Gemmylands prepares over 100 fun levels, each with its own objective. And there are either limited moves or a timer that puts your skills and speed into test. Level goals are rather generic asking you to score points, bring down artifacts or break highlighted chips. But the increased difficulty level and the special squares that appear every once in a while keep the game interesting and the latter levels attractive.
You can create special gems by making matches of four or more tiles and unleash area-of-effect power as a bomb, line-clearer and the likes. Gemmylands keeps the bonus system but minuses its role in the game. Totems give you bonuses. You can unlock five totems when you get the required amount of stars. Rather than buying them to use, you need to fill up the totem meters to use their elemental power. Mostly, they are used to get rid of the specific tiles that cannot be eliminated otherwise.
A free title, Gemmylands has the old timer, Hearts that are needed to play a level. When you run out of them, you have to wait for the auto refill unless you are willing to pay up. As you earn certain amount of stars, you can also unlock and place on the planet different buildings, each able to reduce the recharge time by seconds or minutes. A nice minor feature. But still Gemmylands has longer recharge time than many of its contenders.
Gemmylands does not bring any surprises, but it is good enough to be a time-waster. [Download]
