Hellraid, the PC and console horror action-adventure game, is now having an iOS version titled Hellraid: The Escape. Mobile-optimized, Hellraid: The Escape contains the horror and adventure core of its original, but minuses the action part to naught turning out to be a puzzle-based adventure.
In Hellraid: The Escape, players assume the role of a prisoner who tries to break free from a labyrinth sprang from the perverted mind of a powerful mage called Crell consumed by black magic. To find a way out, he will have to navigate and investigate multiple rooms of several chambers searching for useful tools and clues.
There are different riddles in each chamber to solve so as to unravel the paths towards all rooms and then to the next scenario. Find the key to open a lock, crack the brick wall, throw a stone to trigger a switch unreachable otherwise, walk through a plank over a deadly pit, bribe the guards with gold, lure the minotaur to crush against a wall and so on.
Players need to figure out the way forward in varying situations but they can follow the shiny sparkles as well as the scattered notes from mysterious prisoners and interactive tips to find clues. A puzzle adventure title, Hellraid: The Escape is built upon the established mechanics like gathering objects, using machinery and solving puzzles that fans are very familiar with.
Interacting with the environment is the basis of the exploration. While there are also threats from spawned minion enemies like skeletons and demons every now and then. To get rid of these evil beings requires riddle-solving skills rather than action. Players need to find a proper way drawing upon the environments to crash or vaporize them.
Hellraid: The Escape has a spooky prison fits well into its horror storyline. While the color scheme bores the eyes after several chambers, the maze is created with great details and ingenious layout. Its well-laid hidden treasure and puzzles will keep you occupied and immersed in the mystery-filled world. Combined with the sputtering flame, the occasional vague agony of trapped souls and the rustling of movement and other sounds, the world sucks players in to certain extent. [App Store]
