Master of Craft is a fun simulation-adventure game that shifts its focus from the big real-time warfare to a small cog in the war machine, weapon and armor.
The story premise is set in a distant small village that desperately needs a craftsman who masters the weapon-crafting skills to help them defend the invading monster horde. As a novice apprentice, you voluntarily come to the village and then start the heroic quest.
The core of Master of Craft is the streamlined production. Make twigs and copper pieces separately and then combine them in the Warrior shop to craft a recycled shield. There are three workshops that produce wood, cooper and cotton style materials respectively. And these materials are then used in the Warrior/Archer/Mage shop to craft tons of different types of weapons and armors.
Some crafting materials are gained from quests, or rather battles in the solo campaign. In Master of Craft you will also have a three-member group you can send to the battlefield to defeat enemy monsters for spoils and treasure boxes. From star dust to adhesive grass, you can win these special items to craft certain gear. And after you fill up the level meter, you are rewarded with a treasure box that may contain rare items to be used to craft different gears ranging from rare to the super-powerful infinity.
The battle per se is more like a tuck-in feature in this simulation title. It goes on automatically as your team of fighters takes on couples of enemy waves. What you can control is to equip them with the best weapon & armor before the battle and then click the skill-like bonus buttons after cool-down activating shield, healing and increased power for them. There is not any strategy in combat but mere comparison of stats between your fighters and enemies.
To gain more winning odds, you can use some help from in-game friends by borrowing their heroes to battle. But there is also cool-down after each battle that prevents you from always recruiting the strongest heroes. Besides battle, friends can help each other in trading.
You manage the town economy via gear production and trades. As you upgrade each workshop you unlock new and more complicated weapon & armor. Both production of gear and upgrading of structures take time and cost gold. If you want to enjoy a faster progress, the money-led shortcut is always a ready option.
The small town will evolve and expand gradually as you level up in Master of Craft. After you unlock the crafting-related structures, you can also add a variety of administrative buildings in the extra building slots. From flower shops to churches and to schools, different structures will either generate gold coins or offer specific bonuses like extra Exp, reduced material/gear production costs, more efficient special gear enchantment, faster sales and boosted hero stats.
Master of Craft is a solid simulator that approaches this genre with a smaller, specific scope. It is a nice, casual title that can be played in short bursts of time. [Free Download]
