Mother of Myth is a free and exciting Action RPG by Playnery. Built on in-house 3D game engine, the game is available for download on multi-platform, initially PC &Mac and then all mobile devices based on iOS and Android. I have been playing it on iPad for a while and would like to share some thoughts about it.
Swipe Battle & Simple Control
Mother of Myth has a special swipe-based attack system that fits in really well with the touch-controls. In a battle you can take four deity cards marked varyingly with strokes like a lightening and a circle. You can unleash the godly power of a card by simply drawing the very stroke on it. And other in-game controls are just as easy. Instead of a virtual joystick, the game lets you control your hero to move and deal ordinary attack by tapping.
Of the simple touch-controls, you can say that epic battles are never fought so easily if put positively. But personally, I think the convenient control steals away part of the excitement. With skillful control out of the picture, the battle becomes less challenging despite the dazzling visuals.
Epic Dungeons & PvP Colosseum
Both PvE and PvP battles are available in Mother of Myth. Battle in dungeons takes the lead as usual, being the major channel where your hero can collect coins and cards and grow stronger. By battles in dungeons you level up to earn points that unlock more of the skill tree and gather treasure and more cards for further development. Moreover, the journey through dungeons also unfolds the storyline about the war between gods and titans. Noticeable is that the story is not told in the conventional style but rather an innate manner – as you explore the dungeon you will run into scrolls with a mark above, which once tapped will voice the plots or dialogues with NPC as you continue running uninterruptedly towards your next battle.
As for the arena-based matchups, you can unlock the colosseum when you reach Lv. 5 and enter to compete with opponents of similar levels to earn extra coins. And the PvP battle is not much different with the same swipe and card features except that it ends quicker than in dungeons.
Deity Cards & Character Customization
Cards are an important element in the aforementioned swipe battle. As you clear dungeons you can collect more of them and facilitate the battle greatly. Cards are categorized into two major types, God or Weapon. You can craft the Weapon with certain materials and use unwanted deity cards to boost your favorite types. Either will facilitate your performance in battle.
Mother of Myth is enjoyable on the whole but it has some buzz-killing issues that need to be fixed. First is the regularly unresponsive item enhancement and unlocking new skills. Then, in the fourth dungeon I couldn’t get out after clearing it successfully and had to force-quit it with all treasure lost and spent another key to re-try. Also in one dungeon I was once stuck between a few rocks and couldn’t get out.
Overall, Mother of Myth is a solid action RPG with intriguing features like the swipe battle and card system and decent graphics & sound effects. It fits in with the mobile platform well but needs to iron out the glitches to offer a better gaming experience.
