Ninja Time Pirates is a not a really good name for a cool game. It’s like a rant of three words that repel each other and given the fact that ninja, time and pirates are inclusive elements of the game it buries a psychological hint of the diverse yet scattered patchwork-like gameplay.
In Ninja Time Pirates you build a squad of time guardians and fight aliens to protect the Earth. And your squad members are household names. Not all are the usual fighter materials – while you have the Viking explorer Eric the Red you have a list of candidates including George Washington, Paul Revere, Ben Franklin and more who are not usually seen with big guns.
You start with three soldiers and can unlock and put more into your team. You can customize each of these ancient guys with some mythical & sci-fi weapon from differently colored laser rifles to Thor’s hammer. In addition to equipment, every fighter has its own special power, upgradable, which unleashes blasting effects in battlefield such as the kite electricity of Franklin, cherry bomb of Washington and love portion of Cleopatra.
Ninja Time Pirates has a battle core. It offers a handful of fighting modes that appeal to a great variety of play style and certain strategies. In the story mode you start in the colonial Boston and fight your way to ancient Egypt, the Viking era and beyond. Every level tasks you with certain goals like rescue hostage, destroy all enemy devices or defend the armory under fire of enemy tanks. Missions are not really logically cohesive but battles per se are awesome thanks to its slick graphics, fair dose of strategies and great design of every battlefield complete with different enemies types, vehicles and bonus items like med kits, fact scrolls and artifacts scattered around. Every level has three difficulty tiers that can be switched in-between for replay.
Besides, there is also a wave-based combat mode that puts your skills in tests of endless waves of alien hordes. Looking for some multiplayer battles? A “Time Raids” multiplayer mode is labeled coming soon. And during battle you can harvest coins and the purple animo from dead enemies, which can be spent on your squad members’ outfitting or level-up.
An ill-named title, an incoherent story, some wacky characters, mid-core diverse battles and awesome graphics – that is Ninja Time Pirates. So it’s defective but cool in the core. It’s worth a download and it’s free.
