Icebreaker and 8bit Doves developer Nitrome has launched a new fun and challenging game, Roller Polar, for iPhone and iPad. It is a combination of endless runner and twitchy arcade, and of simple controls and difficult mechanics. It is a game that will frustrate and torture you.
In Roller Polar you control a poor baby polar that rolls down slopes on a big snowball. You need to help him survive for as long as possible by jumping over obstacles. While they lay on the slopes at first, hazards will be rolled over by and into the snowball, and must be avoided.
Downward, your snowball will catch everything on the path ranging from rocks, Christmas trees & snowmen to deer, bears and penguins. Their sizes decide the way you dodge. You can easily jump over small objects or creatures by tapping once, but need to do a high backflip by tapping consecutively twice to avoid those large ones. And the small-sized usually goes easily while the large is tricky, or rather gluey. Take the snowman for example. It takes three rolls to rid it, first a whole body, then a bust and at last its hat.
Besides obstacles on the snowball, you have to watch out for the annoying birds that are too ready to knock you off. You may run head-on with them on the ball or get caught during your flip. Moreover, keep alert to that alert sound signaling the crush into another snowball, and prepare to jump and get a new ball.
Roller Polar is fun and challenging based on our hands-on experience with it. Arcade fans who love torturing themselves for high score will love it. It is free-to-play and small in-app purchase can get rid of the adverts. [Download]
P.S. For players who adore Nitrome, the developer has another new mobile game upcoming, titled Gunbrick, a platform and shooter mashup that looks really cool. If you haven’t heard about it, read our recent report.
