OTTTD, literally short for Over-The-Top Tower Defense, is a cartoony tactical game that merges RTS, TD and RPG together. Simply put, it’s a RTSTDRPG. And that’s truly over-the-top.
In OTTTD you are assigned by the HEROCORP to explore an exotic world for treasure. Colorful and bright as it looks, this world does not welcome outsiders. To blast your way through seems the only options. Luckily, you have powerful towers and heroes at your bidding.
In a battle you can build different towers and lay them out in strategic points preset along the zigzagging paths. Towers will fire at enemies that walk into their attack range automatically. Instead of being idle, you need to command a squad of heroes to battle in real time. Control their movement, select the target and unleash their special abilities in good timing.
Layers of strategy will unravel as you mix & match a variety of units including engineers, recons, scientists, assaults and more. From landmines to shock waves, from cloak to jetpack, heroes are uniquely armed and capable to strike enemies in different styles. Along with that there comes rich RPG gameplay. You can upgrade every hero to boost his capabilities and customize him with the desirable loadout before a battle. You have tons of options in customization. You can swap between each fighter’ abilities, change the equipped armor or weapon, and even have multiple paints for one gun.
Battle is wave-based in OTTTD. You need to fend off multiple waves of attack and will face the enemy’s peak of power when big bosses show up. Abilities aside, the creatively scary looks of bosses is a big selling point for OTTTD. Amongst, you will find an octopus on a chopper, a ghost train fueled by blood, an oversized greenskin undead on a small scooter and so on. Some minions are also imaginatively depicted by combining two ordinary things in an unexpected yet seamless style.
The battle scene is not without gore. In the non-stop volleys of gunfire, you can see brains out of a head, limbs off and dismembered bodies piling on the ground. By employing a cartoony art style, OTTTD dials down the cruelty and violence a little bit. But still if the scene of carnage unnerves you, you will probably not be able to enjoy the game despite the many pluses it gets.
