Overtime Rush is a small beautiful strategy game on the mobile. It brings a fresh air to the tower defense genre. And the freshness mainly comes from its unique icy world, frozen water courses and skating monsters.
It is quite a delight to immerse in this clean and beautiful winter world. But under the fresh frozen surface, Overtime Rush reveals a familiar tower-defense battle mechanics with a twist in the level design.
Overtime Rush includes 12 unique levels at launch. Unless the traditional design, every battle is a survival challenge where endless waves of enemies will keep coming and fighting to break through your defensive line until they consume all your 20 lives. When a battle finishes, it rewards you with coins and a score that fill up the level bar. You can unlock and enter next level only when you charge up the bar of the last. Except the first couple of levels, it generally takes more than one battle to complete a stage.
To enter a new level, you may encounter new enemy types and access to new spells and special bonuses. But you do not unlock new types of towers as you usually do in other tower defense titles. Overtime Rush gives a set of four types of tower unchanged through the game.
The Ice tower won’t attack enemies directly but slows them down, especially the fast runners, in a range so that other towers can get them more intensely. The Cannon tower is the most expensive that deals great damage but fire in a slow rate. In the contrary, the Tesla tower is the cheapest but works well with the Cannon tower in certain extent by electrifying enemies with inconsecutive energy. And there is also the Rifle tower, more like the balanced, which is most effective against relatively slow monsters, for it often miss its shots when used against the fast runner.
Besides the special abilities of towers, wise use of coins is another strategic, if not decisive, factor to success. You have a preset small amount in the beginning of a battle capable of building a weak defense. And you will earn more by killing enemies and calling enemies to battle earlier than the natural waves. Whether to place a new tower or upgrade one in service? Is it wise to bring in a stronger wave of enemies early in order to get extra coins that can be used to help defend the current wave? These decisions will impact on your survival.
Occasionally, killed enemies will drop gems, too. Towers do not consume gems, but boosters do. You can choose three types of boosters – bomb, mines, curse, Kamikaze, blizzard, etc. – before a battle. Bombs are free but all other items have a price. All items have a cool-down time. So although the game developers offer a generous pack of free gems, you still need to use them in good timing.
Enemies are of nice design, more diverse than the tower types at least. As you advance to higher levels, invading troops become tougher with new species showing up. The hockey player-style creature can use its puck to clear your mines; the vampires can turn into bats to shake off the slow-down debuff temporarily; and the mage-style green being can heal all enemies around it. And there are ice skeletons, wolves and many other monsters keeping coming.
Overtime Rush is a small creation that needs further updates to be more solid. But it brings a fresh feel and a special icy charm to the established tower defense pattern. It’s a free-to-play title but without in-app advertizing. If you are into TD games, you may want a download.
