While we are waiting for a launch date of the award-winning racer The Crew Ubisoft promised to release on consoles and PC this upcoming December, the mobile version of this franchise has showed up unexpectedly first. Aptly titled The Crew Road Empire, it is spotted in the New Zealand App Store as soft-launch and available for free download for players with the right iTune account.
Built for the mobile, The Crew Road Empire has the core elements compacted to the touch-screen experience. Its graphics is good but not as stylish and polished as many racing titles on the mobile. As to the gameplay, it is about joining the 5-10 Motor Club and expanding your businesses to a transportation empire.
You assume the role of a Nobody who arrive at Detroit and start a new business on the road. You will hire crew, buy cars and get contracts to make money. As your reputation spreads and pocket expands, you can install new garages to pen new roads and get access to more contracts – Passenger Transportation, Express, Merchandise, etc. – to expand your territory. And reputation will also unlock a rich collection of Specialists who help you gain higher profits.
To deliver contracts, you can assign your drivers. But if you feel like sitting behind the wheel, you can drive by yourself. This part does not require skillful controls but is more like those little endless running games except that it has a time limit. The car will run and pick up speed automatically on the road. What you do is just swiping to change your car between lanes, collecting bonus cash/gold/time while avoiding crashing into other vehicles on the road.
The Crew Road Empire is, currently, only available in New Zealand. It is not certain when it will step out the soft-launch phase. Probably with the release of The Crew on consoles and PC?
