War Commander: Rogue Assault is a tactical wargame featured real-time combat in a 3D world. It is more of a military take on the tower offense mechanics rather than a traditional RTS title. It is another cousin of the ground-breaking Clash of Clans, with a different looks and smaller in size.
A Typical Battle
I am about to strafe the next enemy outpost into a flat land covered with none but cannon fodders and dead bodies, dead bodies of my own men sometimes, sadly. Before launching the attack, it is necessary to check and make sure that the best men and vehicles are aboard. Reinforce the current troop with the newly trained heavy gunner and then we are good to go.
Scout before assault. It helps to get the enemy base layout and most importantly, the locations of its turrets and soldiers. Find the weak point. Yes, let’s start tearing down that weakly guarded Power Plant and then direct firepower to the adjacent turret when it’s paralyzed for a few seconds.
The only tank goes first, sheltering the riflemen and heavy gunner that follow. Well, the first turret is down. Let’s move forward, blasting the oil pumps, metal factories, barracks and all other buildings along the way. It is only a matter of time. What I should concern is the other turret.
Um, shrewd deployment by placing that power plant half-protected by the natural blocks. Why didn’t it occur to me to use the environment to my end? I need to adjust my base defense after this battle. Well, focus on the ongoing battle. With the well fortified power plant, I have to but take down the turrets directly without seconds’ edge. Thankfully, my army is strong enough to finish that.
Demolish the base 100 percent. Yeah. Grab the looted resources, repair my wounded army and prepare for the next battle.
Campaign & Multiplayer
War Commander: Rogue Assault prepares both a solid solo campaign and multiplayer matchups. Both modes are available to access from the very beginning of the game and play similar with the same real-time combat and resource rewards. What’s different is that the campaign is linear with increasing difficulty while the PvP battle is more of free style in that it allows you to choose opponents of similar or higher levels at will.
One more word about the real-time battle. You will get the hang of the battle immediately if having past experience with any tower offense titles. But there are several features worth to be mentioned and talked. First, it allows you to directly control your units during battle – move them to keep certain battle formation and select targets for them to take control of the overall situation.
And then, War Commander has a repair system. Thanks to it, you won’t need to repetitively training the same army units, or specifically, to wait long for the training. Repairing the wounded or damaged costs resources but completes in no more than 2 seconds. Moreover, when being defeated, you can just quickly repair your troops and then resume, instead of restarting, the attack. It makes the battle less challenging. Of that, I personally think it is a minus.
In addition to attack, you also have a base to build and defend. The building part is quite conventional. You construct different structures mainly related to resources, defense and army units and upgrade them to unlock more abilities. Building takes resources but not time. One noticeable feature in War Commander is all moves except battle is fast enough to be completed within seconds.
Along with the PvP battle comes with the defense of the base. After you attack other players, you should prepare for the vengeful assault. Build more platforms and equip them with turrets, upgrade your lab to gain new, superior turrets, and house troops in the rally points to further fortify the base. Besides, it’s important to tactically lay out the defense lines. Don’t forget to use the giant boulders – the natural defense to your benefits.
War Commander: Rogue Assault is overall a casual strategy title with decent graphics and solid tactical battles. It has certain strategic depth in both attack and defense. And its fast building, upgrading and repairing greatly quicken the game pace and make it possible for non-stop play in one sit. [App Link]
